Wooden Floor Advice

Have I shrunk or has the wood flooring underlay got thinner?

Yesterday I went to pick up some stock of a good quality underlay that’s used under real wood floors and laminate flooring. Some time back I’d been advised that Novostrat Sonic Gold is one of the best underlays you can buy. So I found a good supplier in Kent and set off in my van bright and early. I arrived at a new industrial estate surrounded by grassland with ponies grazing close by.

When I walked into the warehouse, I was greeted by the biggest pile of PU carpet underlay I had ever seen. When I say pile, it was not in racks or neatly stacked, it was like amountain of underlay sloping up to the ceiling, a couple of degrees from reaching a critical mass and all tumbling back down to the ground. I had the greatest desire to climb up on a near-by rack and cannonball into the middle of it. The only thing that stopped me was the fear of bouncing off and breaking something important – also the fact that I had never met these people before.

Novostrat Sonic Gold

While I was there, picking up the Novostrat Sonic Gold and some Treadtherm Plus, we got talking about how people search on the internet, especially on eBay, for the best price. Because of this competition, the manufacturers are reducing the depth to offer lower costs. This means we, in the trade, are slowly being cheated of underlay, maybe only as little as 0.4 of a millimeter but that means wood floor underlay and carpet underlay is literally being squeezed from beneath our feet.

As a manufacture cuts its wholesale price they also reduce its thickness. So the conversation went something like this “The 7 mm carpet underlay is really a 6 mm and the 10 mm is a 9 mm and the 3 mm foam wood floor underlay is really 2.6 mm.” I wouldn’t mind if they told you. One carpet company makes underlay called Cozy 10. I’m sure it must still be 10 mm thick but from now on I’ll get my tape measure out to double check.
